Teaching myself ukulele

I mentioned in my second semester post that I taught myself ukulele over winter break. Sadly I don’t have a ton of time to play it at school, but I love it a lot and I feel like I improve whenever I play. I’m gonna talk about the process of teaching myself ukulele. I came into it with a musical background. I took piano lessons as a kid and I’m pretty good at hearing if someone hits a wrong note and I sometimes can play songs by ear. So ukulele came fairly naturally. However, I set my expectations high and I was frustrated when I couldn’t instantly play songs. I had trouble switching between chords and strumming at a quick enough pace. Not to mention my fingers burned with soreness after playing for a long period of time. I took a step back though and reminded myself that no one is an expert over night. With patience, practice, determination, and some finger calluses, I was improving quickly. Within less than 2 weeks of learning the ukulele, I was able to play some of my favorite songs. There’s still room for improvement, as with anything, but I’m proud of myself for not giving up. Whether it be an instrument, sport, art, or anything else in life, if you truly want to achieve it, no one is stopping you from succeeding but yourself. You can do anything if you just put your mind to it and work your ass off.
